Daily Monochrom
An ongoing meditation in black and white.
"Daily Monochrom" is a kind of photographic diary. A ritual of visual practice using a Leica M Monochrom. Each image in this series explores the subtle gradients found in mundane scenes around Bainbridge Island, WA.
I like to think that each of the Spring and Summer vignettes favored moments often overlooked, such as fallen wood, tidal pools, the daily monotony of ferry terminals, forgotten objects, crumbling structures, and the many quiet compositions along homes, beaches, and the woods.
My goal isn’t to romanticize nature, but instead to find seemingly details that are raw, tactile, and alive with contrast. In these explorations, I’ve found that by eliminating color, the photographs naturally bring up a deeper attention to surface, structure, and negative space.
I happen to think that there’s a cinematic stillness here, and yet also a documentary impulse: each frame is a record of where you were, of where light touched these scenes, and how it changed minute to minute.
