Microsoft Office Rebranding

I had the opportunity to contribute to the redesign of the Microsoft Office icon, a beloved and familiar set of creation tools that had been around since the 1980's. The timing of this brand evolution was in sync with the reveal of the brand-new Office mobile app, which combines Word, Excel and PowerPoint with uniquely mobile ways that make document creation easier.

To read more about the creative process, read this little article I published on LinkedIn.

Getting to the final design required perseverance and what felt like hundreds of iterations. Here is a little taste of alternative options we created during our creative journey.

Seen below are the Microsoft Edge icon next to the new design for Office, a pairing we were cognizant of as they would both ultimately be essential hubs for Microsoft 365.

Alexis Copeland created a new set of artworks inspired by the UX film I directed with Buck for the app’s launch. As seen below, we extended the aesthetic over to its presence in cross-platform store presence and press imagery for our launch article and social media.

Office Mobile App

The new icon also arrived in opportune time as we were about to announce a new mobile app for the Office experience. This video is a summary of its capabilities, which go far beyond the unification of Word, Excel and PowerPoint into one app.

Thank you!

Thanks also to our partners in marketing and brand for joining us throughout this journey and to the talents of Matthias Winkelmann, Helge Kiehl and Zelig Sound for their partnership in the creation of the video.
