Utah in black and white
October 2025
Landing in Utah this past summer was felt like discovering an alien world. My first memory while flying over the state was the dramatic reddish color of the Great Sale Lake. But from an airplane, all of the nuanced shifts in color, and play in light and shadow go unoticed.
It was later, as I began to drive through the landscape that I discovered the true magic of the place: amber stones of all shapes, sizes and textures going as far as the eye can see, stacked against clear turquoise skies.
While I also photographed these spaces in color, it felt completely different to rediscover them in monochrome. Suddenly, the perilously balanced stones were much more impressive, and the tiny silhouettes of people blended more seamlessly into the scenery.
All of these photos were taken on Ilford Ortho Plus 80 films using a Leica M6 camera, and mostly a Summilux 35mm lens.
